"Rabbit's clever," said Pooh thoughtfully.
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabit's clever."
"And he has Brain."
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit has Brain."
There was a long silence.
"I suppose," said Pooh, "that's why he never understands anything."
What has this got to do with Coaching? Contemplate this...
"I think there's a world market for maybe five computers." (Thomas Watson, Chairman IBM, 1943)
"Computers in the future will weigh no more than 1.5 tons." (Popular Mechanics, 1949)
"There is no reason why anyone would want to have a computer in their home." (Ken Olson, president founder Digital Equipment, 1977)
"640K ought to be enough for anybody." (Bill Gates of Microsoft, 1981)
Coaching challenges us to overcome mindsets which limit our thinking
Can you imagine where we would be if Bill hadn't overcome his 640K mindset? (Chances are you wouldn't be reading this)
Asking powerful questions helps us to get past what we do know so we free ourselves to think more creatively and in terms of greater possibilities. We think outside the box and so we open up the opportunities and in doing so create more options and better solutions.
How to Work with this
The next time you hear your team member (or yourself) saying, I cant do that rather than encouraging them or discounting their statement ask a powerful auestion instead. I understand that you cant. How would it be if you could? Then listen closely as the possibilities break through.
