Brief Background Information on Personality Tests
The field of personality testing dates back to the 19th century when Sir Francis Galton created the first psychological questionnaire and Alfred Binet created the IQ test. Personality testing as we know it today was trail blazed by Hans Eysenck and Raymond Cattell who theorized that personality was made up of behavioural variables called traits or factors. All modern scientifically constructed personality tests are built on a trait measurement system. The Myers-Briggs test for example measures four traits, The Big 5 has five traits, The Enneagram, which was not scientifically developed, has nine traits.

The Difference between Personality Tests and Psychometric Tests

Personality Tests
The purpose of personality testing, within a work context, is for an employer to learn more about you and how you will react to different situations. These tests typically measure one or more of five personality dimensions: extroversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. They look at your ‘personal style’ rather than ability. In other words, they examine how you prefer to do things, such as the way you relate to others or make decisions, approach tasks and solve problems. Personality tests tend not to be timed and there are no right or wrong answers.

Psychometric Tests (also known as Aptititude Tests)
These tests provide a standardised form of assessment and measure a range of attributes, such as dexterity, literacy, numeracy, verbal aptitude and abstract, spacial or mechanical reasoning. These ability tests are usually administered under timed conditions in either paper and pencil, computer based or online formats.
