An introduction to a series of three articles on how to manage an employee's request for a pay raise - the right way
Money. It’s essential and it’s emotive so there are few bosses who feel comfortable when an employee approaches them asking for more. Most bosses are aware of the consequences of handling an employee’s request poorly. It can be expensive for the business and the employment relationship. So what do you do when an employee arrives in your office with an unexpected request for an increase?
If you’re a larger company then you’re likely to have an HR department, a remuneration system and an annual salary review process. While you need to work within these you can’t hide behind them.
Make sure you completely understand your employer's policy before you start discussing or negotiating any changes to remuneration or benefits with staff. Check out your company's employee handbook or the human resources section of the website. If your employer has neither, simply speak with your Human Resources department.
If however, you’re a smaller business then chances are your remuneration system will be less structured and more informal.
Irrespective of size of company, this series of articles is designed to help managers manage their employees request for a pay raise. Do this well and you will find the return on investment far greater than any percentage increase in salary.
